What is an RTO Internal Audit?

An internal audit is simply another form of feedback following an inspection of your RTO and review of completed files, information and forms. Internal auditing needs to be an independent, objective assurance activity designed to add value and improve an RTO’s operations.

An internal audit simply compares how things actually are, to how we think they are and how they ought to be.

These valuable forms of feedback help uncover areas that are in need of attention and they can be an opportunity to draw back from the day-to-day details of running the RTO operations and to take look at the whole process with fresh eyes. The internal audit is a positive tool in the RTO management system toolkit.

As an RTO, a great deal rides on a successful external audit so having a good Internal Audit process can reduce stress, since you can uncover any problem areas and resolve them before the external auditor begins. To be effective, the internal audit activity should be undertaken by a skilled, qualified and experienced person who can work in accordance with the Standards.

Often RTOs rely on having a fresh set of eyes on the business, so they can really see what is happening though using an external consultant to perform internal audits.

What does an RTO Mentor internal auditor do?

We have a professional duty to provide an unbiased and objective view. We are independent from the operations of the RTO so we can evaluate and report effectively.

The RTO standards require feedback and quality assurance processes to monitor and report on the effectiveness of the management system. An internal audit is an excellent way of providing that process.

Internal auditors deal with issues that are fundamentally important to the survival and prosperity of any RTO business. Unlike external auditors, they provide guidance and consider wider issues such as the RTO’s reputation, students, growth strategies, and the effectiveness of the training.

What is its value to the RTO?
