It is talked about at conferences, it is in the standards, but many people don’t; actually know what to do with it or how they can assist their learners. LLN is more than just maths and English learned at school ‑ language, literacy and numeracy skills are a part of the way we all communicate and use numbers in our everyday lives.
In the workplace spoken and written language and numeracy skills are used all the time. It is interesting that in the UK discussions on why employers want employees to be numerate and what numeracy skills matter most are currently happening across the country. The intent is to describe and recommend numeracy and maths in workplace contexts to achieve business outcomes.
LANGUAGE is the main way we make and understand meaning as humans.
Language is used to communicate and convey meaning from one person to
another. It is used to talk to each other, write and email and text.
LITERACY is the ability to read and use written information as well as to write appropriately, at home, at work and in the community.
Literacy is more than books, it means having a love of the language, being able to follow instructions, fill in forms, read bus timetables, write a note to a household member
NUMERACY is the ability to use the mathematical concepts needed to function effectively in work and social contexts.
Numeracy involves using mathematical ideas efficiently to make sense of the world. While it necessarily involves understanding some mathematical ideas, notations and techniques, it also involves drawing on knowledge of particular contexts and circumstances in deciding when to use mathematics, choosing the mathematics to use and critically evaluating its use. Each individual’s interpretation of the world draws on understandings of number, measurement, probability, data and spatial sense combined with critical mathematical thinking.
